What Is My Veterinary Practice Worth? A 2026 Guide to Veterinary Practice Valuation

One of the questions I'm asked most often isn't, "Can you sell my practice?"
It's actually much simpler:
"What do you think my veterinary practice is worth?"
Most of the time, they're not ready to sell tomorrow. They're simply curious. They've spent years, even decades, building something they're proud of, and they want to understand the value they've created.
And honestly, I think that's a smart conversation to have long before you ever decide to sell.
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that a veterinary practice valuation is based only on annual revenue. Someone will tell me, "We're doing $1.5 million a year," and assume that number alone determines the value of the practice.
The reality is that it's much more nuanced.
While revenue certainly matters, buyers are looking at the overall health of the business. They consider profitability, growth trends, client retention, staff stability, equipment, location, and whether the practice can continue to thrive after the current owner steps away.
That's why two practices generating similar revenue can have very different values.
The veterinary market has also changed dramatically over the last several years. Corporate groups, private buyers, and investors continue to seek quality practices, creating opportunities that simply didn't exist a decade ago. Because of that, many owners are surprised to learn that their veterinary practice value may be significantly higher than they expected.
At the same time, not every practice should be sold today.
A good veterinary practice broker shouldn't just tell you what your practice is worth today, they should help you understand how to maximize what it could be worth tomorrow as well.
I also encourage owners not to wait until retirement to start asking these questions. Life changes quickly. Whether you're thinking about slowing down in five years or simply exploring your options, understanding your value gives you flexibility and peace of mind.
After all, you wouldn't sell your home without knowing what it's worth. Your practice is likely one of the largest financial assets you'll ever own, and it deserves the same thoughtful planning.
The best part? Learning what your practice is worth doesn't obligate you to sell. In fact, many of the owners I speak with are simply gathering information so they can make informed decisions when the timing is right.
My goal is never to pressure someone into a transaction. It's to provide clarity.
Because whether you decide to sell next month or ten years from now, knowing your options puts you in control of your future.
If you've ever found yourself wondering, "What is my veterinary practice worth?", I'd encourage you to ask. You may discover opportunities you didn't know existed, and at the very least, you'll have a clearer picture of the business you've worked so hard to build.
